"A High Flutin' Christmas"
This album is the result of an anonymous gift which was
given to me over Christmas 2000. Therefore I thought it appropriate to use the
gift to record my Christmas arrangements. The interesting thing is that I ended
up using none of my 'old stuff' which I've been playing for the past several
Decembers. All of these arrangements are brand new, written during the summer of
2001. My penny whistle makes its debut on this album, as well as my whistling.
The silver flute is still front and center, my Indian flutes get some nice
solos, and I sing on 3 songs. I also use a couple of non-Christmas songs, albeit
Christmas-y sounding, in support of my belief that Jesus wasn't born for one day
or one season, but for everyday and every season. I'd like to acknowledge
Russell Townsley, guitarist/composer/dear friend who appears here in my
arrangement of Johnny Marks' song "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree".
Russ has recorded his own solo album, called "Horizons", on the
legendary acoustic guitar label "Kicking Mule Records." It's an honor
and a whole lot of fun to have him perform with me on my Christmas album.
This was my first album, recorded in 1998. It is a compilation of hymn
arrangements and original songs, using my variety of flutes and vocals with
background accompaniments which I arranged on my synthesizer. The CD/tape jacket
contains liner notes which tell about the songs. The title song is an original
instrumental piece which attempts to musically describe the refreshment of
coming before a loving forgiving God. I paired this with another original
instrumental more up-tempo song which was inspired, believe it or not, by my
(then) tiny adorable kitten named Jubilee. Jubilee is now a grown cat who
continues to live up to her joyful name. The word 'peaceful' is what I've heard
used most often to describe this album. I'm glad it has that effect. The
waterfall on the cover of "Refreshing" is real. The photo was taken in
December in the NC mountains when it was 40 degrees. Now that was refreshing!
